Confrontation can be pretty tough. We can’t go through life without it, and although it can make or break the relationship you have with someone, you’ll learn a lot from it. Being tardy is kind of the same thing. Someone who has never been late in their whole life is someone worth applauding. Even if we don’t mean to, there have been instances wherein we ended up being late to an event or to work. If there has been an employee at your workplace that’s been coming in late recently and you don’t know how to approach them regarding their tardiness, then read on. Payless Staffing and Consultants, Inc., listed down four ways on how you should deal with late employees:
- Have a talk with them
If their being late to work has raised a couple of eyebrows by now, set aside a time to talk with them privately. Talking to them privately is something that a lot of people would appreciate instead of getting yelled at with everyone to see. Express your concern about their tardiness and remind them about your company’s office hours. A lot of people tend to slack off when they’re getting used to something, and being given a wake-up call can almost always do the trick.
- Give advice
If the employee has given a reason or few reasons as to why they’re always late, ask if you could give them some advice. The act might be invading their personal space, but it’s something a good employer or head does. They empathize with their employees and treat them as human beings and not just workers. The last thing employees want is to have someone as their leader who clearly doesn’t care for them.
- Be open
Don’t shrug off their reasons and say, “that’s not a valid excuse”. If that person has been doing a great job and he suddenly started showing up to work late, there might be a good reason for it. Let them have a chance to explain their side before delivering your verdict. We come from all walks of life, and even though there might be instances where our situations are almost the same, it doesn’t mean it is. There will always be factors that make up a gap, and a good employer knows this.
- Know when they’re taking advantage
Unfortunately, there will always be people who abuse people’s kindness. If you’ve been considerate to an employee’s tardiness because of valid reasons, watch out for people who might take advantage of this. It’s okay to be wary sometimes since it can help you be careful with how you handle your employees. But giving off the impression that you don’t trust them can make the workplace have an unfriendly environment. Find a balance and maintain it.
